Below is a list of common questions we receive regarding commercial photography. If you have other questions, please feel free to contact us and we will get back to you shortly.
Q: What are the particulars for getting an estimate?
A: I would be more than happy to get an estimate written up for you right away. I just need a little bit of information to get you as accurate a quote as possible. Here are a few examples of the information I may need for your shoot:
– When and where is your shoot?
– What kind of images do you need created? (Portraits, Headshots, Products, Services, Interiors/Exteriors)
– What is a rough estimate of the number of shots needed?
– What will you be using the images for? (Website, Internal Marketing Materials, External Marketing Materials, Annual Reports)
Q: Who owns the images?
A: All of the images taken by a photographer remain his or her exclusive property, as stated by “Copyright Law.” Images are licensed for your specific usage, and copyright can be transferred if you are interested in a complete “buy out” of the images. This is not necessary for most clients, and will often cost more that the shoot itself, but is available as an option.
Q: Can you meet me at the location prior to the shoot for scouting purposes?
A: I prefer that we have a pre-meeting at the shoot location. This allows everyone to be on the same page for the shoot, and by knowing the location and your specific needs at the location, I can work as efficiently as possible in creating high quality imagery. It also gives us a chance to get to know each other face to face which always makes a difference on the day of the shoot as you are already comfortable being around me.
Q: Can you shoot at night or on the weekend?
A: I am available virtually around the clock, and I will work during whatever part of the day or week suites your needs best.
Q: Can you shoot in studio?
A: One of the great things about my services is that I will bring the studio to you at your convenience. That said, I have access to a variety of studios to suit your specific needs if necessary.
Q: Do you shoot digital or film?
A: Technology has advanced to a point where the quality of digital cameras now meets or exceeds comparable film cameras. That aspect, coupled with the speed in processing of digital means that I shoot digital capture for the vast majority of my work.
Q: Can I view my images online?
A: Yes. Every client gets their own personal online gallery of selects from the photo shoot. The gallery is password protected so that no one is looking at the gallery beyond those you have enabled access to. You can also have downloads enabled if you need access to the images right away.
Q: Is third party usage allowed?
A: Third party usage is not allowed. Images are licensed exclusively for use by your company, and this license cannot be transferred in any way to a third party, be it another business entity, employees or affiliates. These parties may contact me to license for their own usage of the images.
Q: What is your typical turnaround time?
A: Depending on the shoot volume, I typically have selects available to view online within 3-5 days of the shoot, and can have them available sooner depending on your specific needs. (Additional charges may apply.)
Q: Are there any hidden fees or services?
A: I do everything I can do make sure that I give you my best estimate of costs and expenses before the shooting begins including items like post-processing, assistants and equipment rental. If any unexpected costs or expenses arise I will discuss it with you promptly.
Q: What forms of payment do you accept?
A: I accept credit cards, cash or check payable to Soleil Portraits .
Q: Can I use my images on Facebook?
A: Social media is incredibly important for business, and I will make sure that you are licensed to use your images for your business page.
Q: How many photographers do you have?
A: This also answers the question of “who will be our photographer?” Every photograph seen on anything talking about Soleil Portraits has been taken by Yana. However, we have regularly provided a second photographer when requested.
Q: How big is the team you work with?
A: This will depend upon the shoot we are being asked to carry out but generally speaking on the day it would be the photographer and one assistant.
Q: Will you hold a shoot date while we decide?
A: Yes. Complete the appropriate form and a shooting date will be held, however please note that if you cancel within two-weeks of any confirmed date, we will charge a half-day fee for each day canceled. If you cancel within one week of a scheduled day, we will charge a full-day fee for each day canceled.
Q: Do you shoot with film or digital cameras?
A: We have been shooting with digital cameras since 2005
Q: How much time should we allow for planning a shoot?
A: We like hearing this question because when we do not hear it the alarm bells really start ringing. In short the old chest nut “by failing to prepare you are preparing to fail” always applies however the amount of time needed will depend entirely upon the shoot being carried out.
Q: How many photographs do you take/do we get?
A: Again this will depend entirely upon the shoot being carried out and will be finalized during the preparation. Always bear in mind however that the idea is quality not quantity.
Q: Do we get every single photo that you take on the day?
A: Generally yes, we do delete the odd image on the day where we may have tested the exposure in a difficult lighting environment or when a person has clearly blinked in the shot.
Q: Do you shoot RAW or JPEG?
Q: Do you provide us with high resolution digital files of every photograph?
A: Yes. This too will be finalized in the preparation of a shoot but at worst 300dpi JPEGs are supplied.
Q: Do you store/archive the digital files?
A: Yes. Every digital file/photograph we ever take is archived onto external hard-drives and these are placed in storage.
Q: Do you include prints?
A: No. We are more than happy to but generally a client has so many areas they wish to use the images we provide that we simply provide the digital files in a private online gallery or DVD.
Q: Are you able to tailor a shoot to suit our needs?
A: Absolutely, just let us know what you are looking for and we will put together something to suit.
Q: How long after the shoot date should we expect to wait to get our photos?
A: It can be one week or less but in cases where special requests are made turnaround times can be more. Again, depending upon your needs turnaround times will vary.
Q: How do we book?
A: Simply complete the booking form and pay the agreed deposit.
Q: Do you supply videography services?
A: No, we specialize in photography but we have a couple of people we work with regularly and can confidently recommend.
Q: What kind of camera do you use?
A: Canons 5D’s
Q: What sort of lighting do you use?
A: Natural light, natural light and more natural light (where possible of course). We prefer to use a camera mounted flash as little as possible and we do use a hand-held video light from time to time. In a studio environment we will of course use the appropriate studio lighting (ie: umbrella, soft-boxes etc).
Q: What software do you use primarily?
A: Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop
